JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Primary School English Language Teacher
Line Manager: Deputy Head, Academic Affairs


General Purpose of the Job

Duties and Responsibilities

Overall Responsibilities

  • Uphold high standards in all aspects of school life, particularly pupil progress.
  • Actively support the school’s vision, ethos, culture, and policies.
  • Inspire and motivate pupils, teachers, and school staff.
  • Adhere to the Harrow staff Code of Conduct and engage with the appraisal and performance management process.
  • Ensure safeguarding and promote the welfare of children and young people.

Teaching and Learning Responsibilities

  • Apply the curriculum aims in the Primary Education Curriculum Guide [Pilot Version] (CDCHK, 2022) for English Language.
  • Plan, prepare, and evaluate lessons, activities, and strategies, either individually or collaboratively.
  • Create a safe, secure, and stimulating learning environment that accommodates individual pupil development.
  • Differentiate teaching strategies and resources to meet diverse pupil needs and interests.
  • Apply IT tools to enhance teaching where appropriate.
  • Be adaptable to changing circumstances and guidelines.
  • Assess pupil progress through formative and summative assessments, providing feedback for individual learning plans.
  • Engage in the assessment and self-evaluation process with pupils.
  • Provide late-afternoon learning support for boarders every two weeks.
  • Staff experienced in boarding education may express interest in a Boarding Housemaster/mistress role with reduced teaching load.

Pastoral Care and Pupil Management

  • Uphold the Harrow philosophy of treating children with dignity.
  • Monitor pupil work, providing guidance, fostering self-esteem, and offering structured and stimulating lessons.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, maintaining appropriate records.
  • Lead moral education sessions and promote community links.
  • Ensure high standards of behavior and dress in all school settings.
  • Follow health and safety policies for pupils on and off school premises.
  • Take a pastoral interest in pupils beyond the classroom.

Accountability

  • Respect the needs of colleagues and the school’s team dynamic.
  • Positively engage in meetings and contribute to school efficiency.
  • Participate in professional development and cross-curricular initiatives.
  • Stay informed of current educational research and subject knowledge.
  • Contribute constructively to school reviews, self-evaluation, and inspections.
  • Be proactive in maintaining IT skills in line with the school’s Digital Learning Strategy.

Safeguarding

  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of children, working collaboratively with others to identify and support children at risk of harm.

Boarding and Non-boarding Duties

  • Assist with extra-curricular and other school duties, including attending boarding or non-boarding responsibilities after school hours and during holidays as required.
  • Attend educational courses or seminars when requested.

Other Responsibilities

  • Foster strong parent-teacher relationships through communication and meetings/workshops.
  • Participate in student admission activities.
  • Take on additional reasonable duties, including class cover, as requested by Senior Leadership.

Requirements

Education, Training, and Qualifications

  • Degree with primary education teacher training (English Language), recognized in Hong Kong or the UK, or an equivalent teaching qualification with QTS.
  • Knowledge of the English Language Curriculum (CDCHK) or the KS1/KS2 National Curriculum of England.
  • Proficiency in English for teaching.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Effective use of learning and teaching strategies.
  • Understanding of how children develop and learn at primary school age.
  • Ability to promote pupil safety and well-being.
  • Effective use of IT to enhance learning.
  • Experience working with pupils whose first language is not English or at the secondary level is a bonus.
  • Communication and engagement with parents are essential.
  • Experience in teaching children is necessary.
