Position: Long-Term Substitute Teacher, Reading Specialist
Location: Harmony Hills Elementary School, Silver Spring, MD
Job Type: Full-Time
Assignment Dates: December 2, 2024 - February 21, 2025
Wage Range: $20.29 - $35.84 per hour

Summary Description

The reading specialist supports students in constructing meaning in reading. Under the direction of the principal, the reading specialist provides services to administrators, counselors, teachers, and parents. The role includes using informal and standardized measures to diagnose the strengths and needs of individual students and/or groups, teaching basic and developmental reading.

Certificate/License

  • Master’s degree or equivalent post-baccalaureate graduate credits in reading.
  • Advanced Professional Certificate.
  • Maryland reading specialist certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of MCPS goals, guidelines, and current professional research to coordinate and evaluate all schoolwide reading services.
  • Thorough understanding of the educational process; background in content area desirable.
  • Ability to assume responsibility as approved by the principal and in conjunction with other school leaders (e.g., resource teachers, counselors) to initiate and provide reading services aligned with the needs of all students.
  • Ability to articulate a schoolwide reading program to staff, students, parents, and feeder and receiving schools.
  • Ability to provide in-school training in reading and language arts to school staff and serve as a schoolwide resource.
  • Skills in written and oral communication, human relations, organization, and management.
  • Completion of MCPS Teacher Test.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • Master’s degree or equivalent post-baccalaureate graduate credits in reading.
  • Advanced Professional Certificate.
  • Three years of teaching and/or clinical experience, preferably at the level of assignment.
  • Eligibility for Maryland reading specialist certification.
  • Experience in administering, analyzing, and interpreting standardized tests.
  • Other combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills may be considered.
