The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Friedrich Schiller University Jena invites applications for a position in:
Theoretical Physics – Relativistic Astrophysics
at the level of either a W3-Professorship, or a W2-Professorship with a tenure track to W3.
About the Role
We seek a dynamic and accomplished researcher (m/f/d) with a strong track record in gravitational physics and relativity. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:
General relativistic astrophysics
Gravitational waves and their sources
Mathematical and theoretical foundations of classical and modified gravity
A robust background in mathematical and/or numerical relativity is highly desirable.
Expectations
The successful candidate will:
Contribute to and expand existing theoretical research collaborations within the department, particularly in quantum field theory, astronomy, and computational physics
Demonstrate leadership in securing third-party funding and science management
Participate actively in academic self-governance and interdisciplinary cooperation
Engage with the public and foster science-society dialogue
Contribute to teaching at all levels, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and teacher education programs
Help modernize and innovate our teaching offerings, especially in theoretical and relativistic physics
Qualifications
Applicants must hold:
A completed university degree
A relevant doctoral degree
A habilitation or equivalent academic qualifications
Proven teaching proficiency
Appointment Details
If appointed directly as a W3 professor, the position is permanent (civil servant status, subject to legal eligibility).
For first-time professors, the position will be filled initially as a W2 (limited to 6 years). Upon a successful tenure evaluation, promotion to W3 will follow without re-advertisement.
