The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Friedrich Schiller University Jena invites applications for a position in:

Theoretical Physics – Relativistic Astrophysics
at the level of either a W3-Professorship, or a W2-Professorship with a tenure track to W3.

About the Role

We seek a dynamic and accomplished researcher (m/f/d) with a strong track record in gravitational physics and relativity. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:

  • General relativistic astrophysics

  • Gravitational waves and their sources

  • Mathematical and theoretical foundations of classical and modified gravity

A robust background in mathematical and/or numerical relativity is highly desirable.

Expectations

The successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to and expand existing theoretical research collaborations within the department, particularly in quantum field theory, astronomy, and computational physics

  • Demonstrate leadership in securing third-party funding and science management

  • Participate actively in academic self-governance and interdisciplinary cooperation

  • Engage with the public and foster science-society dialogue

  • Contribute to teaching at all levels, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and teacher education programs

  • Help modernize and innovate our teaching offerings, especially in theoretical and relativistic physics

Qualifications

Applicants must hold:

  • A completed university degree

  • A relevant doctoral degree

  • A habilitation or equivalent academic qualifications

  • Proven teaching proficiency

Appointment Details

  • If appointed directly as a W3 professor, the position is permanent (civil servant status, subject to legal eligibility).

  • For first-time professors, the position will be filled initially as a W2 (limited to 6 years). Upon a successful tenure evaluation, promotion to W3 will follow without re-advertisement.
