Position Overview
The University of South Carolina Lancaster invites applications for the position of Dean. The Dean reports directly to the Chancellor of Palmetto College and is responsible for providing visionary leadership in both academic and administrative functions across all areas of operation. This includes managing faculty, overseeing academic and non-academic programs, and ensuring the overall financial and operational success of USC Lancaster.
The ideal candidate will be a student-centered, innovative, and collaborative leader capable of engaging with various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, community leaders, and external partners. They must foster an environment of academic excellence while also working to build a sustainable vision for the university.
Primary Responsibilities
- Leadership & Policy Development: Lead the development, implementation, and review of academic and administrative policies for all major areas, including student services, instructional programs, and financial operations.
- Administrative & Academic Oversight: Administer both academic and non-academic programs, ensuring quality and consistency across departments and campuses.
- Community & External Relations: Represent USC Lancaster in community relations, working with external agencies such as advisory boards, alumni, local businesses, legislators, and media.
- Advocacy & Financial Management: Identify community needs and secure financial support through fundraising, grants, and maintaining public support. Oversee the campus budget, capital expenditures, and financial management.
- Inclusive Leadership: Foster an environment that prioritizes inclusive excellence, critical thinking, and community engagement.
- Accreditation & Enrollment Management: Manage national accreditation processes and lead efforts to increase student enrollment and retention.
- Teaching Opportunities: While the primary focus of the Dean is leadership, they may teach courses with permission from the Chancellor. Recent Deans have taught one course per year.
Required Qualifications
- Education: An earned doctorate from an accredited institution.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience at the Department or Division Head level or higher in a higher education institution.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated leadership in academic administration, including a record of scholarly achievement.
- Experience with fiscal management, fundraising, and securing external resources.
- Strong commitment to inclusive excellence and collaborative leadership.
- Skills:
- Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships within the campus community and beyond.
Preferred Qualifications
- A visionary leader with creativity, initiative, and a strong organizational ability.
- Proven success in building relationships and securing resources to enhance the campus's reputation.
- Experience in managing interdisciplinary teams, growing enrollment, and developing distance education programs.
