Description
The Biological Sciences Department at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, is seeking a dedicated and innovative Marine Ecologist for a tenure-track faculty position. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to Cal Poly’s renowned “Learn by Doing” philosophy and advancing the Marine Sciences B.S. degree program. The position will be appointed at the Assistant Professor level, with the possibility of consideration for higher ranks based on qualifications and experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Teaching: Provide high-quality instruction across various biology and marine science courses for undergraduate and graduate students, including upper-level courses in marine ecology and/or marine phycology/botany.
- Research: Develop an independent, student-centered research program that includes mentorship for undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) students. Utilize the unique marine resources available at Cal Poly, such as the 1-km pier, scientific diving program, and seawater system.
- Service: Engage in departmental and university service, including curriculum development, student advising, committee work, and building industry relationships.
Preferred Expertise
- Specialization in Benthic Marine Ecology: Background in marine phycology and/or botany is preferred, but those with a focus on fish, invertebrates, and other taxa are also encouraged to apply.
- Areas of Interest: Population, community, and ecosystem ecology; mariculture; evolution; natural history; and conservation/restoration.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Biology or Related Field: The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Biology, Marine Ecology, or a closely related field by the start date.
- Teaching and Research Excellence: Proven commitment to teaching, student mentorship, and active research.
- Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): Demonstrated ability to promote DEI through research, teaching, and service.
About the Department
The Biological Sciences Department is the largest academic unit within the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics, offering Bachelor of Science degrees in Biological Sciences, Marine Science, and Microbiology. The department serves over 10,000 students annually through a diverse range of courses, the majority of which include a laboratory component. Faculty research grants have totaled almost $7 million over the past five years, and the department is supported by an annual operating budget of $230,000.
