The Stanford Center on Early Childhood, an initiative of the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our interdisciplinary research team. This position focuses on designing, developing, and evaluating advanced computational models of responsive caregiving behaviors, with a particular emphasis on auditory and visual processing through machine learning techniques.
Position Overview: This 1-year fixed-term position may be renewed based on performance and funding. The role is eligible for a remote work agreement, though limited travel may be required for collaborative work and events. Applicants should be eligible to work in the US, as visa sponsorship is not available for this position. About Us: The Stanford Accelerator for Learning (SAL) is housed within Stanford Graduate School of Education and is a pioneering research hub that connects experts from diverse disciplines to expedite learning solutions for all. SAL’s focus includes digital learning, early childhood education, learning differences, equity in learning, and more. The Stanford Center on Early Childhood (SCEC), an initiative under SAL, seeks to revolutionize early childhood research by fostering collaboration across sectors to ensure every child thrives from the start.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop Computational Models: Design, evaluate, and implement machine learning models to analyze responsive caregiving behaviors based on naturalistic data.
- Contextual Analysis: Investigate how different environmental conditions and activities impact model performance and caregiving behavior analysis.
- User Study Design: Conduct studies to assess model performance impacts on labeling workflows used by human experts in child development.
- Behavioral Consistency Analysis: Explore the consistency of caregiving behaviors across varying interaction contexts.
- Supervision and Coordination: Oversee a team of data labelers, software engineers, and researchers, including managing external consultants and vendors.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, development, and maintenance of complex Big Data systems and data-intensive solutions.
- Collaborate with Product and Data Science teams to build machine learning models addressing real-world problems.
- Define guidelines, standards, and processes for data quality and integration.
- Ensure the security and effective integration of applications, data, and components.
- Develop prototypes and proof-of-concepts using software development best practices.
- Oversee and mentor junior team members and collaborators.
Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in a scientific or analytical field.
- Experience in data structures, algorithms, and techniques for high-volume datasets, including machine learning and NLP.
- Expertise in relational, NoSQL, and distributed data processing techniques.
- Proficiency in scripting languages and high-performance computing techniques.
- Experience in system analysis, security controls, and scalable Big Data platform development.
- Strong project management and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Computational Modeling, Machine Learning, Child Development, or a related discipline.
- Strong background in computational modeling, particularly for behavioral data analysis.
- Proven experience in designing and conducting research studies on naturalistic data.
- Experience with child development research and human-computer interaction principles.
- Ability to present complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Pay and Benefits: The expected salary range for this position is $168,000 to $180,000 per annum, with the final offer based on factors like qualifications, experience, and location.
